Why did I make a collection of powerful words to live by?
I wasn’t expecting anything unusual the day I was sucker punched. I never saw it coming! The bad news I received that day fourteen years ago pulled the rug right out from under me.
When I heard the news, the bottom fell out of my world. At that moment, I felt utterly hopeless. But that was just the beginning.
Over the course of several months, the resulting circumstances just got worse. I thought I had been through some tough times before, but these troubles were getting the best of me and leaving me at my worst.
The control freak in me was out of control and freaking out!
I was struggling to try and look up, yet when I did, there didn’t seem to be any hope. My circumstances weren’t changing, and I finally realized that maybe they never would.
What if there’s no such thing as light at the end of the tunnel?
I was discouraged and questioned whether it was worth trying anymore. I was frustrated and unmotivated because I had allowed my circumstances to come between me and God.
I needed something solid to focus on instead of my ever changing circumstances.
I needed truth to rebuild my hope on the One who never changes.
I needed wisdom to guide me through the hard times.
I needed encouragement to inspire me to look beyond my circumstances.
I needed to get my eyes off of me and my circumstances and onto the truth that could renew my mind with positive motivation.
I was long overdue for a spiritual tune-up.
WHAT DO PEOPLE MEAN WHEN THEY SAY “WORDS TO LIVE BY”?
Are you in need of a spiritual tune-up?
Are you looking for some guidance to direct you through the hurdles and hurts of life?
People need a foundation of solid truth to build their lives on. Especially during hard times when faith must be fought for and selfishness must be fought against.
Having a fundamental collection of words to live by gives people something to anchor their hope on and motivate them to move on beyond their circumstances.
The right collection of words to live by can provide the framework for looking upward and outward, instead of inward.
Words to live by help you focus on what’s true now, even when the false prophet in your heart stirs up fear that threatens your faith.
Words to live by provide wisdom when you need it most.
It’s impossible to plumb the depths of wisdom provided in the Bible, but the eleven Bible verses listed below summarize some of the greatest wisdom, inspiration and direction available to the person willing to embrace them.
Dicionary.com defines "inspire" as a verb:
The last two definitions indicate that a thought or feeling is affected. Words do affect us, but not all words are truly inspirational.
You can find thousands of inspirational quotes, but the word inspirational is relative.
What inspires you may not inspire me. And though these inspiring words may arouse your thoughts, do they have the power to force you into action? The right action?
But the first definition explains what happens when words are inspired by God. It means the words themselves have ability to give life.
These verbs--animate, quicken and influence--can only be effective if they come from the Only One who can give life--God!
The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16 that all Scripture is inspired by God. The word “inspired” means divinely breathed in by God Himself.
In Hebrews 4:12 it says the word of God is alive and powerful. The word “alive” means living, breathing, strong and effective.
The word “powerful” comes from the Greek word “energes.” It’s where we get the word “energy” which means vigor, force, potency.
It means God’s Word has life-giving energy that is active, operative, effectual and powerful.
Only God’s inspiring words have true ability to fill people with life to guide them and motivate proper action.
QUOTES ABOUT GREATNESS
Surprisingly, the only quotes about greatness in the Bible are either praising God’s greatness, or warning man that greatness according to God’s definition requires service and suffering.
When Jesus washed the disciples feet he gave them an example of servanthood. This was the Son of God stooping to the level of the lowest servant to do the dirtiest job. Then He told them to do the same.
Another time, some of the disciples were vying for the favored positions in the coming kingdom so Jesus clarified what that role of servanthood really looked like.
He told them how His life and death would be used to serve them, and that's the example they were to follow.
Not many people want to take that path to greatness. Nor would they consider "suffering" and "serving" as inspiring words to live by.
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Your red alert lights should start blinking whenever you see quotes about greatness regarding man. The whole reason we have sin and suffering in the world is because Adam and Eve wanted to be great like God. The devil still uses greatness as a temptation to everyone, including you and me!
Take Jesus words to live by to heart.
Greatness is expressed in humility.
Jesus was the greatest man to ever live. If you want to be great, you must become like Him. It’s a life of humility, service, sacrifice and suffering. But it’s motivated by love and results in joy.
The disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
1 Peter 2:21
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
The world has a lot of good to offer but not all advice or quotes are worthy of attention.
In fact, some are very dangerous.
Here are a few examples of “deep quotes” culled from a Google search.
Honore de Balzac
The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which
you will always find forgiveness.
I love my mother, but she held a grudge like no other. Including against her children. This quote sounds good, but if you realize that everyone sins, including mothers, it doesn’t take long to expose this as sentimental fluff instead of truth.
It is not I who am strong, it is reason, it is truth
This sounds good at first glance but man’s reason is not the same as God’s truth. In fact, over time, man promoted his own reason as fact and God’s truth as fiction and said whoever believed the latter was a fool.
Yet the Bible states over and over that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Only a fool would put himself above God and consider himself stronger for it.
A clear conscience is the sure sign of a bad memory.
Maybe for people who don’t have a relationship with God. But Christians confess sin and their consciences are cleared. They have no need to rehash their past and beat themselves up with guilt.
They don’t forget, but they move on because their guilt has already been paid for by Christ.
These “deep quotes” sound deep, but they should probably be drowned in a very deep lake or they could lead people astray.
But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
If you need a deep quote to make an impact on your life, consider this one:
May your convictions be deep, your love real, and your desires earnest.
May your whole life be settled and established, that all the blasts of hell,
and the storms of earth shall never be able to move you.
LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST QUOTES
When I searched the Internet, I found thousands of “live life to the fullest” quotes.
And I definitely believe each of us should live life to the fullest! But once again, you need to be careful about what a full life really means.
If it means trampling over others in order to fulfill your dreams, that’s not a full life, but a sinful one.
What happens when you’re chasing your dreams and hit a roadblock?
Can you overcome every one of them? Or has God put some of them there for reasons you’ll never understand? Just something to think about.
According to the Bible, the way to live life to the fullest, is to have a relationship with God now, and for all eternity.
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
MOTTOS TO LIVE BY
What is a motto?
Dictionary.com defines a motto as:
A motto is basically a short phrase that is supposed to guide your decisions and actions.
Mottos to live by can be created by anyone and can be easy to remember and very encouraging.
I still remember a motto to live by I memorized as a young child:
Whatever’s worth doing is worth doing well.
It may be important you never can tell.
So no matter how little it may seem at the start,
If you do it, then do it with all of your heart.
I have never forgotten it and it’s often come to mind when I’ve felt like slacking off or quitting. I think it fueled the perfectionist in me to do everything to its utmost, like polishing the toilets everyday after scrubbing and sanitizing them.
But as I grew older, and through hard times grew wiser, I realized the focus should not be on “doing well” as much as on “worth doing.”
Funny how much a motto’s influence is changed when you change which words to emphasize. Sparkling toilets just don’t compare to comforting a sorrowful friend.
I still believe it’s important to put your whole heart into something, but what’s most important is knowing if something is worth doing in the first place.
Every time you focus on man’s words to live by instead of God’s, you risk moving in the wrong direction.
If you really want mottos to live by that you can use as a framework to guide your life, as well as a tool to renew your mind and keep you focused on what’s truly important in life, you need God’s Word.
The Bible has the only TRUE words to live by that have the ability to change you from the inside out.
God’s Word provides guidance and wisdom for your journey through life. It provides fuel for worship to give you that spiritual tune-up when life is hard and painful.
The Bible’s words to live by don’t just get you through life or change your life--they ARE life!
The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
