Marriage is the most intimate relationship in life, and yet so often, the most misunderstood. God’s standard for marriage is hard to live up to but it’s nearly impossible to live up to a standard you don’t know about or understand. Fortunately, there are many Bible verses about marriage throughout the scriptures to teach Christians about the importance of sex, love and marriage.
There are numerous Bible verses on relationships that describe how God covenants with His chosen people and how they are to reflect His image by keeping their covenants and loving as He does.
This article uses Bible scriptures to outline the general topics relating to Christian marriage.
BIBLE VERSES ABOUT MARRIAGE
Marriage was first instituted by God by putting two people together and declaring them to be one. It was designed to be a lifelong union of intimacy and commitment, and a means of creating a social structure for raising children.
That’s still His design. Since marriage God’s way requires a lifelong investment, it would be wise to know what you’re getting into before the wedding day.
It’s important to note that the Bible verses about marriage emphasize marriage for Christians should only be among believers and although it is a lifelong relationship, it does not extend into eternity, but is for the duration of life on earth only until death.
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
“When a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any other public duty. He shall be free at home one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken.
And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever?
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT HUSBANDS
The Bible verses about marriage teach that marriage is a privilege for husbands and requires sacrifice and service. The Bible commands a married man to “love your wife” but it doesn’t leave him guessing what that looks like. It also includes instructions on “how to love your wife.”
Surprisingly, one of the most famous Bible verses about marriage is searched for by men seeking “love my wife quotes.” Maybe because they wisely know that the way they treat their wives determines the effectiveness of their prayers!
Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.
1 Corinthians 11:3
But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
Husbands love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
1 Timothy 3:2
Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.
1 Timothy 3:12
Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.
1 Peter 3:7
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT WIVES
Before marriage, a woman may want to know how God defines her future role as a wife. She asks, “What is a wife? What does the Bible say about family?” The Bible has the answers.
There are marriage scriptures that elevate the role of wives as a blessing, and others that show how sinful behavior can repel their husbands. Loving wives will appreciate these Bible verses about marriage to help them understand their responsibilities, as well as character that honors God.
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.
House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.
It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.
It is better to live in a desert land than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.
An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
1 Timothy 5:14
So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.
Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
1 Peter 3:1-5
Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.
Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.
For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT LOVE
The Bible doesn’t hide the fact that there are conflicts in marriage. It shows the tenderness, as well as the sinfulness of human hearts. That’s why understanding God’s love is so important in Christian marriage. Love in the Bible is never described as a feeling, but as an action. Both the husband and the wife are to love each other as God has loved them.
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Song of Solomon 8:6
Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the Lord.
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
1 Corinthians 10:24
Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
1 Peter 1:22
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
1 Peter 4:8
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
1 John 4:7
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:11
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT SEX
Some people might be embarrassed talking about sex but the Bible isn’t! There are many Bible verses about marriage that address sexual relations. Song of Solomon is a true love story devoted to the topic of sex and describes the passionate intimacy shared between a young couple in love. It is so erotic, the Jews would not allow their sons to read it until they reached a certain age!
This list also includes some good Bible verses about the wrong use of sex, either immorally with fornication or adultery, or by withholding sex within marriage. God gave sex as a gift to married people, expecting them to enjoy it and engage in it regularly. God takes sexual sin seriously.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Song of Solomon 1:2
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.
Song of Solomon 4:10
How beautiful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils than any spice!
1 Corinthians 6:16
Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.”
1 Corinthians 7:1-5
Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does.
Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
1 Corinthians 7:8-9
To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT DIVORCE
And this second thing you do. You cover the Lord's altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. “For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.”
But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?” He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”
For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
1 Corinthians 7:10-16
To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should not separate from her husband (but if she does, she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not divorce his wife.
To the rest I say (I, not the Lord) that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he should not divorce her. If any woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he consents to live with her, she should not divorce him.
For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so.
In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has called you to peace. For how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
1 Corinthians 7:39
A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.
What’s the use of all these Bible verses about marriage unless you understand why God gave the scriptures to mankind anyway? From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is a story of redemption. Ephesians 5:29-32 says marriage is a picture of the gospel.
"For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church."
Marriage is not only for the benefit of mankind’s physical time on earth, it is also a reflection of God’s redemption story.
